Despite the name meaning ‘small Murud’, Murud Kecil is not especially close to the much taller Gunung Murud. It has been climbed at least on a handful of occasions by scientific researchers. The usual access point is the small settlement of Long Lellang, which has a very small airport with MAS Wings flights.
The area at the base of Murud Kecil is known as Ulu Baram. Not surprisingly it takes a fair amount of time and determination to get there. Wilson Chin of Kuching made a trip and he has some great photos of Batu Siman, a striking little mountain of three steep cliff peaks, not unlike Gunung Daik, on Pulau Lingga in Indonesia’s Riau Islands not far from Singapore.
