2024 Malaysia Hikes in July/August

Hello all. Dan here, co-founder of Gunung Bagging.

Below is the 2024 itinerary for July and early August.

As permits need taking care of and some treks require 4WD to reach the trailheads, registration will close in late June. You are welcome to join the trips, assuming you are experienced and fit. Prices usually include permits and official guide (unless otherwise specified). You need to arrange your own transport, food, tent etc. though it may be possible to share. I will be hiring a car so will often have spare seats. Further info is available on request:

1. Borneo (Sabah). Day-hike (traverse) on Crocker Range to Minduk Sirung (2,081m). Start/finish in Kota Kinabalu. National Park guide. Pleasant forest hike along a high ridge. Monday 1st July 2024. 200 RINGGIT EACH (including transport from/to Kota Kinabalu).

2. Borneo (Sarawak). 3 days at the world-famous Mulu Park for the Mulu Pinnacles (1,179m) hike. National Park guide. No camping. Popular and with good reason. Start/finish Kota Kinabalu Airport or Miri Airport. SORRY, FULL! Early July 2024

3. Borneo (Sarawak). 5-day expedition from Bario to Batu Lawi (2,046m) hike. Local expert guides. Rarely undertaken, and one of the most scenic, iconic spots in Southeast Asia. We aim to reach the top of the female peak. 4 nights in shelters/camping. Start/finish Miri Airport. SORRY, FULL! Early July 2024.

4. Peninsular Malaysia. 3-day hike to Gunung Benum (2,107m), one of Peninsular Malaysia’s 4 Ultra-prominent peaks. This is a compressed version of what is normally a 4 or 5 day trek, as the easier route in from the west remains closed. 2 nights camping. Local guide. You need to be fit and fast for this compressed version. Saturday 13th – Monday 15th July 2024, must be ready for 7am start on 13th. 350 RINGGIT EACH (or less, depending on numbers) including 4WD, guide, permits. 9 SPACES REMAINING. OPEN.

5. Peninsular Malaysia. Day hike to Gunung Irau (2,110m), highest in Cameron Highlands. Via Mossy Forest entrance. Fairly easy but muddy. Local guide. OPEN. Tuesday 16th July 2024. 140 RINGGIT EACH. 6 SPACES REMAINING.

6. Peninsular Malaysia. 2-day hike to Gunung Rabong (1,538m), a little-known peak near Gua Musang that is on the edge of Taman Negara National Park and has great views at the top. 1 night camping. Local guide. OPEN. Wednesday 17th – Thursday 18th July 2024. 4 SPACES REMAINING.

7. Peninsular Malaysia. 3-day hike to Gunung Chamah (2,171m), one of Peninsular Malaysia’s G7 peaks. 2 nights camping. Local guide. OPEN. Friday 19th – Sunday 21st July 2024. 400 RINGGIT EACH (or less, depending on numbers) including permit, guides, 4WD. 11 SPACES REMAINING.

8. Peninsular Malaysia. Half-day hikes to Gunung Kerunai (1,000m) and Gunung Alai. Both very scenic with amazing views but not very high so suitable for the fit but inexperienced. No camping needed but headtorch and 2am start required. Local guide. OPEN. Monday 22nd July 2024. 100 RINGGIT EACH (plus 15 RINGGIT each for Kerunai 4WD). JUST 2 SPACES REMAINING.

9. Peninsular Malaysia. Day hike to Gunung Arang Para (999m), the site of a former colonial plantation and bungalow. Rarely visited, rough trail, but of considerable historical interest. No camping needed. Local guide. SORRY, FULL! Late July 2024.

10. Peninsular Malaysia. Half-day hike to Bukit Kledang (808m). This one is a popular jogging spot for Ipoh residents, not very high, suitable for the fit but inexperienced. Again, of historical interest as there was once a hill station here. No camping needed. No guide needed. OPEN and FREE. Wednesday 24th July 2024, early start.

11. Peninsular Malaysia. Half-day hikes to Gunung Baling and Gunung Pulai (620m). Both very short and scenic with amazing views but not very high so suitable for the fit but inexperienced if you have a head for heights as the trails are steep. No camping needed. Headtorch and 2am start required. Local guide. OPEN. Thursday 25th July 2024. 100 RINGGIT EACH.  JUST 1 SPACE REMAINING.

12. Peninsular Malaysia. 2-day hike to Gunung Ulu Sepat (2,161m) , one of Peninsular Malaysia’s G7 peaks. 1 night camping. Local guides. OPEN. Saturday 27th July – Sunday 28th July 2024. 380 RINGGIT EACH (or less, depending on numbers) including guides, permit, 4WD. 18 SPACES REMAINING.

13. Peninsular Malaysia. Day hike to Bukit Baginda (450m).  Half-day hike to a stunning ‘wave rock’ formation. No camping needed. Local guide. OPEN. Tuesday 3oth July 2024. 50 RINGGIT EACH. 4 SPACES REMAINING.

14. Peninsular Malaysia. 3-day hike to Gunung Yong Yap (2,168m), one of Peninsular Malaysia’s G7 peaks, plus Bubu and Tok Nenek. 2 nights camping. Local guides. OPEN. Friday 2nd August – Sunday 4th August 2024. 280 RINGGIT EACH including guides, permit, 4WD. 9 SPACES REMAINING.

15. Peninsular Malaysia. Bukit Unyang (730m) dayhike near KL. OPEN. Monday 5th August 2024. Local guide. 60 RINGGIT EACH. 6 SPACES REMAINING.

16. Peninsular Malaysia. Long day hike with night-time start to Gunung Rajah (1,685m). No camping needed but a very long day-hike with head-torch and stamina essential. Local guide. OPEN. Tuesday 6th August 2024, very early start around 2am. 100 RINGGIT EACH. 6 SPACES REMAINING.

17. Peninsular Malaysia. Bukit Lagong (575m) dayhike near KL. OPEN. Wednesday 7th August 2024. Self-guided, just pay for permits, RM20 or less. 6 SPACES REMAINING.

18. Peninsular Malaysia. Bunga Buah (1,430m) dayhike near Genting Highlands. OPEN. Thursday 8th August 2024. Self-guided, just pay for permits, RM20 or less. 6 SPACES REMAINING.

These are all not-for-profit trips where the costs are split equally between participants and in rare cases where there is a shortfall the costs will be covered by Dan of this website so the hikes will 100% go ahead even with a small group. You therefore participate at your own risk and are encouraged to get relevant travel insurance – especially if you are not a Malaysian citizen. Given how time-consuming planning is, these deposits are non-refundable except in the event of us having to cancel.
