Gunung Raya is the highest peak of Langkawi island and is one of the most north-westerly mountains of the lands where mountains are called ‘gunung’. Despite its name meaning ‘great’ or ‘big’, it is not be the most impressive peak nor the most interesting trek, but there are some decent views and it makes a very pleasant half-day out on what is a lovely island.
Gunung Rembau is the highest part of the large mountain range southeast of KL and Seremban. This hilly area stretches tens of kilometres from Seremban all the way down to Tampin in the south. The most popular hikes in the area are the easy Gunung Angsi (825m) in the north and Gunung Datuk (705m) in the south.
Gunung Nuang is Kuala’s Lumpur’s closest major mountain. It is one of the highest peaks in Selangor and it is very popular because both trailheads are only around one hour’s drive from the centre of Kuala Lumpur. Despite being so close to KL, the mountain is still home to a lot of wildlife and hornbills are frequently seen on the Janda Baik side of the range.
Until the 1960s, Gunung Ulu Kali would have been like most other high mountains of the Malaysian Peninsula. But since the construction of the large Genting Highlands shopping centre and resort, it has become the most urbanized of all the upland areas in Peninsular Malaysia.
Western Hill is the highest point of the island of Penang (Pulau Pinang). Many visitors visit nearby Penang Hill, which was once a favourite colonial retreat, is easily accessible and features temples, restaurants, souvenir stalls, an owl museum and a pitcher plant garden.
Known incorrectly as ‘Krakatoa’ to most of the Western world, this cluster of small islands is the site of one of the most well-known volcanic eruptions in history.
The Gunung Gading National Park near Lundu is world-famous for its Rafflesia flowers which regularly bloom near the Park headquarters. During those times, tourists flock to see the largest flower in the world but it can be difficult to predict and the blooming period is very short. It seems to be most common in November, December, February and March but can happen at any time of the year. There is also some very good trekking in the Park.
Gunung Serapi is located in Kubah National Park and is near to the Matang wildlife sanctuary. At 911m, it is the tallest peak in the Kuching area. It can easily be climbed in a single day, as most hikers complete the trek in 5 hours or less and it is a very popular jogging spot. The mountain is actually known as the Matang range, and Serapi is the highest peak of the range.
